 Granodiorite
Intrusive igneous rock
This beach-rounded cobble is a piece of granodiorite, similar to granodiorite found throughout the Sierra Nevada Range. This sample contains larger phenocrysts of quartz and feldspars imbedded in a finer light-colored crystalline matrix. This sample is from Monterey, California where granitic bedrock of the Salinian Block crops out. The Salinian Block consists of Cretaceous-age crystalline basement rocks, including granodiorite intrusive rocks, that were detached and carried northward on the west side of the San Andreas fault.
